How We Read Glass Joint Adapters Before Choosing One
Glass adapters are small parts, but they are some of the easiest accessories to order incorrectly. A product can be the right 14mm size and still be useless if the male and female ends are reversed. When I compare adapters, I read the connection from one end to the other before looking at the shape, price or anything else.

Read an Adapter From One End to the Other
The clearest product names work almost like directions. A 14mm female to 14mm male adapter has one female receiving end and one male inserting end. An 18mm male to 14mm female converter changes both the size and the gender between its two ends.
This sounds simple, but it prevents one of the most common ordering mistakes. I never rely only on a product photo because a frosted glass joint can look larger or smaller depending on the camera angle.
Male and Female Describe How the Glass Connects
A male glass joint is the tapered section that inserts into a compatible female joint. A female joint is the receiving opening. The two compatible sides fit together rather than matching male with male or female with female directly.
When two pieces have the same gender, that is where a gender-changing adapter becomes useful. A male-to-male adapter can connect two compatible female joints, while a female-to-female adapter can connect two compatible male joints.
A Same-Size Adapter Can Still Solve a Compatibility Problem

This is why I would not call every adapter a reducer. Reducers change size. Gender changers can keep exactly the same diameter.
10mm, 14mm and 18mm Describe Joint Diameter
SmokingCats currently carries converters across the common 10mm, 14mm and 18mm joint families. Smaller compact glass often uses 10mm, while 14mm and 18mm appear frequently across water pipes, bowls, downstems and other attachments.
I do not choose a joint size based on the overall height of the bong. A large water pipe can still use a 14mm bowl, and a compact glass piece can use a different connection. Check the actual joint instead.
A 10mm Female-to-Male Adapter Changes Gender Without Changing Size
Our 10mm Female to 10mm Male Glass Adapter is a straightforward example. Both ends remain 10mm, but one receives a 10mm male joint while the other provides a 10mm male connection.
Products like this are useful examples because the purpose is easy to explain without adding marketing language. The adapter changes the connection orientation, not the joint diameter.
Male-to-Male Adapters Solve a Different Problem
A Male-to-Male Glass Adapter provides male connections on both ends. SmokingCats currently offers this design in 14mm and 18mm sizes.
This type is easy to buy incorrectly if you only remember the size. If the two glass parts you are trying to join are already female, male-to-male may be correct. If one of those pieces is male, you need a different adapter configuration.
Female-to-Female Adapters Work the Opposite Way
Our Female-to-Female Glass Adapter is currently available in 14mm and 18mm female configurations. It receives compatible male glass parts on both ends.
Male-to-male and female-to-female adapters are therefore not two names for the same product. Their physical connections are opposite.
Size Converters Need Both Numbers in the Title
When an adapter changes diameter, I want both sizes visible in the product title. Our 18mm Male to 14mm Female Glass Adapter is currently listed at approximately two inches long.
The name immediately tells me that the two ends are not interchangeable. One side is 18mm male and the opposite side is 14mm female. Reversing that wording would describe a different piece.
Direction Matters More Than the Words 14mm to 18mm
A search for a 14mm to 18mm adapter is still incomplete. You also need to know which end is 14mm, which end is 18mm and whether each end is male or female.
That is why I prefer product titles written in full directional form such as 14mm Male to 18mm Female instead of a vague title such as 14/18 Converter.
Use the Original Glass Parts as Your Reference
When possible, I check the joint on the water pipe and the joint on the accessory separately. Write both down before shopping. If the water pipe has a 14mm female joint and the accessory is already a compatible 14mm male piece, no converter is needed.
If both parts are male, or if the sizes differ, then the correct adapter becomes easier to identify. This is much safer than buying several adapters and hoping one fits.
A Z Adapter Changes Position as Well as Compatibility
A straight adapter mainly changes the connection between two parts. A Glass-on-Glass Z Extender also moves the connected accessory away from the original joint position.
The current SmokingCats Z extender is approximately three inches across. That physical offset is the main reason to choose it instead of a short straight adapter.
Why I Look at Clearance Before Buying a Z Extender
Sometimes two glass parts technically have compatible joints but sit too close to the main body. A Z-shaped adapter changes the physical position and can create additional separation.
I still check the product photo carefully because an offset adapter also moves weight farther away from the original joint. Extra clearance and extra leverage come together.
Y Splitters Are Not Ordinary Size Converters
Our Y Glass Joint Splitter is approximately 2.5 inches long and currently uses one 14mm male joint that divides into two 14mm female ports.
That makes it a splitter rather than a normal one-input, one-output converter. I would keep splitter products clearly labeled because a Y adapter solves a different physical problem from a straight gender changer.
Splitters Add More Glass and More Leverage
Adding two branches means more glass sits away from the original connection point. The weight of anything attached to those branches also matters.
I would not treat a splitter like a tiny invisible fitting. Look at how the total setup will sit and avoid putting unnecessary sideways pressure on the original joint.
J-Hooks Belong Near Adapters but Are Not Really Converters

I would keep that distinction clear in the product title and filters. The collection can contain related glass connectors without pretending every piece performs the same job.
Do Not Force Ground Glass Joints Together
If two joints do not fit with normal gentle insertion, I stop and check the size and gender again. Forcing the wrong glass connection can chip an edge or place unnecessary stress on the joint.
A converter is supposed to solve a compatibility problem. If it needs force to fit, that is usually a sign to recheck the specification instead of pushing harder.
Product Photos Should Show Both Ends Clearly
Adapter photography should be functional before it is artistic. I want to see both frosted joints completely, preferably from an angle where the male and female ends are obvious.
For converters that change size, a second image with simple 10mm, 14mm or 18mm labels would probably prevent more ordering mistakes than another decorative product photo.
Our Product Names Should Work Like Compatibility Labels
I prefer a title such as 18mm Male to 14mm Female Glass Adapter over a generic name such as Glass Converter. The exact direction is the most important thing a customer needs to know.
This is one category where shorter is not always clearer. Four extra words in the title can prevent someone from ordering the exact opposite adapter.
How I Choose a Glass Adapter
I start by writing down both original joints. Then I identify the size and gender of each one. After that I decide whether I only need compatibility or whether I also need extra height, an offset or a splitter.
Only after those questions are answered do I choose between a straight adapter, same-size gender changer, reducer, Z extender or splitter. That method is much more reliable than shopping by appearance.
