Does China or India Make Real PYREX Glass?

China and India both make large amounts of borosilicate glass. Some of it is good quality. But that does not automatically make it genuine PYREX-brand glass.
This is where many online listings become misleading.
PYREX is a registered brand name, not the general name for heat-resistant glass. A factory in China or India can make borosilicate tubing with similar properties, but it cannot honestly call the finished product PYREX unless the material is genuine branded glass and the trademark is being used with permission. Corning describes its PYREX laboratory glassware as Type I, Class A, low-expansion borosilicate glass. (Corning)
Corning does operate manufacturing businesses in China and India, but that fact alone proves nothing about an oil burner pipe. Corning makes many different products around the world, including optical fiber and specialty materials. A seller cannot point to a Corning factory in China and then claim that an unmarked Chinese pipe is genuine PYREX.
For the glass most relevant to American-style laboratory tubing, Corning says its Corning 33 borosilicate tubing is produced exclusively in Vineland, New Jersey. Corning also produces Corning 51 pharmaceutical tubing on three continents, but that is a different glass product and should not be confused with proof that ordinary pipes from China or India are PYREX.
So the honest answer is:
China makes borosilicate glass. India makes borosilicate glass. However, a Chinese-made or Indian-made pipe is not automatically genuine PYREX.
A seller should be able to provide:
- The actual glass manufacturer
- The glass grade or formula
- The country where the tubing was made
- The country where the finished pipe was shaped
- Proof that the PYREX trademark is being used legally
Without that information, the safest description is simply borosilicate glass, not PYREX.
A product can still be strong, useful, and well made without carrying the PYREX name. The problem begins when an ordinary borosilicate product is given a famous brand name just to raise its price. That is why we describe our pipes by their verified material instead of calling everything “Pyrex.”
